Sold-out for the past fifteen seasons, White Rock Concerts is unique on the Canadian classical music scene. It is debt free, grant free and artistically free.
Founded by George Zukerman, O.C., O.B.C., S.C.T* in 1956, he remained its Artistic Director for 59 seasons. In 2016-17 he passed the baton to the duo-piano team of Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann.
Over the years this uniquely successful membership series has brought a continuous flow of the finest in national and international classical music to the White Rock-South Surrey region.
In its earliest years, concerts were given in the old Semiahmoo Elementary School on Oxford St. The membership in the 1956-57 season numbered just over 200. From the very earliest season, successive Boards of Directors have maintained a "subscriptions-only" policy. Later, as the membership grew, White Rock Concerts moved to the First United Church on Buena Vista, and since 1992 has been resident at the White Rock Baptist Church on 140th St. at 16th Avenue. Today’s membership, at capacity of the church, is 785.
Under Mr. Zukerman’s direction the organization presented a dazzling array of distinguished artists and ensembles ranging from Ben Heppner to Isabel Bayrakdarian, from Angela Hewitt to Anton Kuerti, from Tafelmusik to the Victoria Symphony, from the Gryphon Trio to the Vogler String Quartet, from Chanticleer to the Elmer Iseler Singers, from Jens Lindemann to Dame Evelyn Glennie.
In 2007, White Rock Concerts was named Canadian Presenter of the Year by the national arts forum, CAPACOA. Currently, the organization presents a series of seven concerts each season. The annual memberships assure White Rock Concerts’ financial success, without dependence on federal, provincial or municipal grants.
White Rock Concerts is proud to remain a volunteer organization, registered under the Society Act of British Columbia. An active community-based Board of Directors is responsible for the continued secure governance of the Society. The organization is a member of the BC Touring Council [BCTC] and The Canadian Arts Presenting Association [CAPACOA].
Artistic Directors, Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann maintain an active international touring career, with worldwide recognition as an outstanding duo-piano ensemble. In recent seasons they have taken a page out of touring history of the last century, and have concertized widely with their two grand pianos in tow. Marcel Bergmann is also well known as a composer and arranger. Founder George Zukerman has been designated Artistic Director Emeritus.
